Clinical Expertise

Our surgeons provides attentive and personal discussion with the family to provide clear understanding of the diagnosis and the surgical planning.  They are vastly experienced in all areas of pediatric surgery including head and neck, thoracic, abdominal, and limbs for congenital anomalies and deformities, GI digestive problems, acute surgical problems, cancer, and trauma.  They are  particularly recognized for their experience and skills in minimally invasive surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease and pectus excavatum correction.

Prenatal Pediatric Surgery Consultation

Working closely with perinatologists, obstetricians, neonatologists, and pediatrician, Our surgeons provides family consultation for prenatal diagnoses.  The opportunity to explain the surgical problem and plan surgical intervention with pediatric surgeon is invaluable for the expecting family and care for the newborn child.  We can best prepare the family and provide the optimum coordinated surgical care with a multi-disciplinary team approach.  Our surgeons has long standing reputation in providing continuity of care from prenatal diagnosis to delivery and from surgical diagnosis to surgery.

Minimally Invasive Neonatal Surgery

At BHPS, we offer the latest minimal invasive surgical procedures including laparoscopy and thoracoscopy for most pediatric surgical conditions.  Our surgeons has performed numerous neonatal minimally invasive procedures for the first time in the Los Angeles area.  Congenital conditions such as esophageal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation, pulmonary sequestration, duodenal atresia, malrotation, Hirschsprung’s disease, and imperforate anus can be corrected with minimally invasive techniques.  Procedures can be performed with key-hole incisions which allow faster recovery, minimal pain, and excellent cosmesis.

Single Port Access Surgery

Taking minimally invasive surgery to the next frontier, Our surgeons has performed numerous procedures with the latest development in laparoscopic surgery, utilizing the single port access.  These operations are performed through a single innovative port placed in the umbilicus (belly button) allowing small instruments to pass and accomplish the surgery.  The patient has only one small incision in the umbilicus.  The result is minimized pain and virtually no visible scar after the surgery.

Pectus Deformity Surgery

Chest wall deformity is a common congenital problem that often is unrecognized.  The most common forms are “sunken chest” called pectus excavatum and “pigeon chest” called pectus carinatum.  Our office has developed a comprehensive surgical program in the area of pectus deformity correction.  Dr. Chen has dedicated expertise to provide both minimally invasive technique known as the Nuss procedure and the open technique known as the Ravitch procedure.  He has achieved outstanding outcome in the chest wall reconstructions for both children and adults from local and regional areas as well as out of state and overseas.
